Together, from 2011 to 2022, the Massachusetts Voter Table and our partner organizations have had conversations with almost 750,000 unique voters in Gateway Cities and Boston. We have trained over 1,000 grassroots leaders and have influenced all levels of government, from municipal to federal.

MVT partner organizations made collective decisions on participating and supporting key local and statewide campaigns. With our partner organizations and allied coalitions, we have:

  • Increased funding for affordable housing by winning the Community Preservation Act;

  • Played a leading role in Raise Up Massachusetts to pass the Fight for $15 and Paid Family and Medical Leave;

  • Passed and implemented early voting, mail in voting, and Automatic Voter Registration with the Election Modernization Coalition;

  • Led MassCounts’ mobilization for the 2020 Census;

  • Led the Drawing Democracy coalition for redistricting;

  • Won the Fair Share Amendment and the Work and Family Mobility Act through the 2022 ballot questions.

Today, we are leading statewide efforts for Election Day Registration, allocating money from the Fair Share Amendment and progressive revenue.

Victories

  • MVT supported passage of CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) reform in 2010 and subsequent implementation. Our advocacy and outreach allowed people who had been incarcerated to seal their records and access jobs, housing, and other opportunities for social and economic advancement.

  • With Raise Up Massachusetts, MVT provided data and technical assistance for the Earned Sick Time ballot initiative, which passed in November 2014. This guarantees five days of paid sick time for employees in Massachusetts.

  • As part of the Election Modernization Coalition Steering Committee, MVT helped lead efforts to pass early voting and pre-registration of 16- and 17-year-olds in 2014.

  • MVT supported efforts in Boston and Chelsea to pass local ballot initiatives in 2016 for the Community Preservation Act. The passage of the Community Preservation Act has led to new funding for affordable housing, green space, and historic preservation.

  • In 2018, MVT helped lead efforts to pass Automatic Voter Registration as part of the Steering Committee of the Election Modernization Act.

  • In 2017 and 2018, MVT was part of coordinating the collection of 150,000+ signatures in support of the $15 minimum wage and Paid Family and Medical Leave with Raise Up Massachusetts. We participated in the negotiations that led to the passage of both policies in 2018. The $15 minimum wage will raise the floor for 900,000 low-wage workers in Massachusetts. In its first six months of implementation, nearly 40,000 individuals took job-protected paid leave.

  • In collaboration with MassCounts, especially the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition and the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, MVT successfully advocated for the allocation of $3 million from the state budget to create the Complete Count Grant Fund, which provided resources to nonprofit organizations and local Complete Count Committees for 2020 Census mobilization.

  • By leading the MassCounts census mobilization efforts, MVT succeeded in getting out the count for the 2020 Census. Massachusetts surpassed its 2010 self-response rate in 2020, and the estimated undercount in Massachusetts was 0.11%, the sixth lowest miscount in the country.

  • In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, MVT worked with the Election Modernization Coalition to pass mail-in voting and expanded early voting in 2020. We led the Safe Election Network’s phone banks, text banks, and digital advertising to share these new voting options with BIPOC, immigrant, and low-income voters.

  • Building on our leadership of Census mobilization efforts, MVT convened the Drawing Democracy Coalition to win fair maps in the redistricting process. The Drawing Democracy Coalition increased the number of majority-minority House Districts from 20 to 33 and doubled the number of majority-minority Senate Districts.

  • The Fair Share Amendment won at the ballot in 2022 and raises taxes from millionaires to fund public education and transportation. MVT partners turned out voters across the state to pass this historic law.

  • MVT provided data and field support for the Work and Family Mobility Act ballot question, which passed in 2022. This law allows undocumented immigrants to safely and legally get driver’s licenses.
